ABOUT JONATHAN

The son of a preacher man—who was also the son of a preacher man—Jonathan hails from the “Christ-Haunted landscape” of the American South, in Flannery O’Connor’s phrase...

While the product of the sweat and sawdust of the tent revival, Jonathan believes in a big, wide tent, where all of you is welcome; and he preaches a love that is hotter than fire and brimstone.  At 6’5”, he is known for his commanding frame and bold preaching, but also a voice made tender from his own experience of finding God on the underside.

Jonathan is the author of two acclaimed books, Prototype and How to Survive a Shipwreck, with a third book coming from Zondervan in late 2018. He has served as a pastor, church planter, and an activist. Finding God at the intersections, He moves fluidly between secular and religious contexts, between the academy and the Church, and between local churches with pipe organs, B-3 organs, and electric guitars. Wherever he goes, the message is always the same: no matter who you are, where you’ve been, or what you’ve done—God is at work, to bring beauty out of your brokenness. He has carried this message to churches (like Willow Creek Community in Church in Barrington, IL; Elevation Church in Charlotte, NC; Ecclesia Church in Houston, TX), universities and seminaries (like Princeton Theological Seminary and Southeastern University), and to conferences and retreats all over the world (places like Australia, Israel and Palestine, Lebanon, Kenya, Ireland, Sweden, Italy, as well as Mexico and Canada).

Jonathan’s work and/or words have been featured in places like the New York Times, The Atlantic, NPR, Newsweek, Vox, Sojourners, The Huffington Post, and Relevant Magazine, and he has published in scholarly journals, like The Journal of Pentecostal Theology

Currently, he hails from Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he lives with his small Havanese dog Stella, and obsesses over the Oklahoma City Thunder.
